Dahmani – a Town of Bicycles

Dahmani is located in the south western part of the governorate El Kef. While people can reach Dahmani and its surrounding area by shared mini buses, within the small town itself, the number of motorized vehicles seems relatively limited. Locals, instead, use a sporty alternative riding on their bicycles to make up the infrastructural equipment.

The mountains surrounding the town provide natural water sources and give some insights into the region’s flora and fauna as well as into its history by ancient ruins.

Enclosed between this mountain area called Ebba, which means “market” in Phoenician language, and the Roman Ksour Hilla (Qṣūr Hilla), “castles of Hilla”, Dahmani used to be called Ebba Ksour in previous times. This name remained until 1973 when the town was renamed after the medieval local saint Sidi Dahmani (Sīdi id-Dahmǟni).
